“Surround yourself with people that are as hungry for success as you are.” -Unknown (instagram meme quote that is now my iPhone Background)
As 2017 is coming to a close I’ve been taking time to reflect on the year; my wins, my losses, the people in my life, and the person I have become. One major lesson I learned this year was to pick your tribe wisely. 2017 has been quite the year for finding people I want to surround myself with. I’ve gotten really close to some people, trusted the wrong people, found a few people I don’t know how I lived without and I can honestly say after a lot of trial and error, I finally found my tribe.
We have all heard that you are a product of the 5 closest people to you about a million times; let me make it a million and one. YOU ARE A PRODUCT OF THE 5 CLOSEST PEOPLE TO YOU. This is not a lie. There have been multiple studies showing that our environment has a huge impact on the decisions we make and the type of person we are. With that being said the people you surround yourself with will either make or break you.
I find now, that I observe people for a hot minute before I make the decision to give them any of my time. (I don’t know how to word that without sounding like a creep) When I am talking to people I find one of the first questions I ask myself is, “Are they someone I want to become?”. If the answer is no then my time is better spent elsewhere. You might be thinking ,”Sierra that is pretty harsh.” or “But this person is the nicest person I’ve ever met.” or “ they need someone like me in their life, they don’t have anyone to look up to.” Well, it is harsh and selfish and maybe you could be a great influence on them but there will inevitably be an adverse effect on you.
“It is better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you will drift in that direction.” – Warren Buffett
As much as you care for or want to help a person, if you spend 90% of your time with someone who doesn’t know their left from right you’re likely to get lost in the process. The same goes for if you spend your time with someone who knows who they are and where they are going you are going to be more inclined to get your shit together too.
The people you choose to surround yourself with are who you are going to become. Choose people who inspire you, people who are motivated and ambitious. Surround yourself with lions, not sheep. (Thanks Sean Whalen) If you need to lose some deadweight , don’t hesitate. Spend 2018 with your TRIBE and kick some ass.
